Lincoln's Secret Passage Through Baltimore Re-created to Kick Off 150th Anniversary of the Civil War Events

Yearlong Special Events and Exhibitions Reflect on a Nation Divided

PR Newswire

BALTIMORE, Feb. 23, 2011

BALTIMORE, Feb. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Baltimore began commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with a unique recreation event. Warned of a possible assassination plot, President-elect Abraham Lincoln secretly traveled through Baltimore in the very early morning hours of February 23, 1861, en route to Washington, D.C. for his inauguration. Today the famous journey was recreated as Lincoln arrived at the Camden Street train station by carriage. Lincoln then addressed the media to discuss the need for his clandestine passage through Baltimore, a city heavily divided in 1861.

The city of Baltimore is steeped in Civil War history as the war's first blood was shed during the Pratt Street Riot. The city's cultural and historical partners have organized a robust calendar of special events and exhibitions to bring an important part of U.S. history alive for locals and visitors of all ages.

On the weekend of April 15-17, 2011, Baltimore will commemorate the Pratt Street Riot, with events that will reflect on the turbulent and critical years in which the city was occupied and the state became a battleground. The weekend will include a procession on Pratt Street, the grand re-opening of President Street Station, living history theatrical presentations throughout the city, a Civil War Trails Expo, a symposium at the Maryland Historical Society, and Civil War living history encampments and candlelight tours at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine.

Beyond the weekend events in April, the city will also host exhibitions throughout the year to educate visitors on the importance Baltimore has had during our country's history including:

Riots, Railroads and the Coming of Mr. Lincoln

February 23, 2011 – December 2011

The Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards, housed in the former Camden train station, marks the 150th anniversary by exploring stories of Abraham Lincoln's travels through Baltimore, from his journey to his inauguration under the cover of darkness to his final passage home aboard his funeral train.

The War Came By Train

Opens April 15, 2011

The B&O Railroad Museum will exhibit the largest assemblage of Civil War railroad equipment in the world, featuring locomotives and rail cars as well as military and personal artifacts (some never before seen on public display). A narrated, roundtrip train ride will be available to the original site of Camp Carroll, the largest Union encampment in Baltimore.

Divided Voices, Maryland in the Civil War

Opens April 16, 2011

The Maryland Historical Society shares stories of a state caught between North and South. A Civil War Expo will bring the 1860s to life with a time tunnel, live performances, music and other exciting features.

Personal Accounts of the Civil War Experience

Opens April 29, 2011

Join the Mount Clare Museum House and experience Camp Carroll, a Civil War camp in what is now known as Carroll Park. A special exhibition will explore the personal side of war, both North and South, through objects and stories of people who personally witnessed and participated in the war.

The commemoration will continue in 2013 as the city honors Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad and the Emancipation Proclamation, and in 2014 with the Jubilee 1864.

Award Winning Educational Hip Hop Program Killed by Budget Cuts

One of the nation's first programs to bring full-time Hip Hop education to high school students seeks new partners after financial crisis terminates its 5-year run

PR Newswire

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 22, 2011

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Since 2006, The Global Awareness through Hip Hop Culture program has been at the forefront of legitimizing the use of Hip Hop culture in mainstream education. Based at a charter school in South Los Angeles, it has been one of the only educational Hip Hop programs in the nation offered as a regular class to middle and high school students. Sadly, due to ever-increasing budget cuts, the program will no longer have a home come June 2011.

Sebastien Elkouby, the program's founder, created this class to address the educational crisis that affects about 50 percent of inner-city students across the U.S. He says, "For a variety of reasons, many students feel completely disconnected from the traditional educational process. This class uses the positive elements of Hip Hop culture that aren't usually promoted in mainstream media as a medium to develop critical thinking skills while teaching them language arts, social studies, and life skills."

For the past two years, Elkouby watched budget cuts terminate programs nationwide and suspected that his program would eventually suffer a similar fate. "I can't expect my program to be safe when thousands of teachers across the country are receiving pink slips. When it comes down to choosing between a Hip Hop class and a science class, it doesn't take a genius to figure out who's getting the ax first, no matter how enriching my program has proven to be."

During its run, the program experienced great success. Elkouby says, "We've achieved a lot. We've had Hip Hop legends like MC Lyte and KRS-ONE as guests. We've sent kids to DJ retreats. We've been awarded state-of-the-art studio equipment. We've received international media coverage and been featured in documentaries ... and this doesn't even cover a third of what we've achieved. But what I'm most proud of is the impact that the program has had on the students. For hundreds of them, this class has been life-changing."

Former student A. Dominguez says, "Taking this class has made me realize how much I have changed as an individual and has given me the hope to pursue my wildest dreams. Everyone should be able to participate in such a life-changing experience!"

In 2007, Elkouby began working with the International Visitors Council of Los Angeles, advising educators from around the world on how to use Hip Hop culture as an educational medium. In 2008, the National Society of High School Scholars selected Elkouby as "Educator of Distinction." Unfortunately, this wasn't enough to prevent the program from being terminated.

Elkouby is hopeful that the program will find a new home. "It doesn't even have to be offered at a school," he says. "I'm open to bringing the program wherever the need is. I know that there's money available to fund creative programs. We just have to find it. Who knows? It may even come from someone in the Hip Hop community."

The Global Awareness through Hip Hop Culture Program is currently in session until June 2011.

Arianna Huffington & David Brooks Square Off Against P.J. O'Rourke & Zev Chafets to Debate: America's Two-Party System is Making America Ungovernable
Debate to broadcast on NPR stations nationwide and telecast on Bloomberg TV globally beginning February 21 at 9PM EST

PR Newswire

NEW YORK, Feb. 16, 2011

NEW YORK, Feb. 16, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The latest round in America's premier debate series, Intelligence Squared Debates, pitted President and Editor-in-Chief of Huffington Post Media Group, Arianna Huffington and New York Times columnist David Brooks, against America's premier political satirist P.J. O'Rourke, and Zev Chafets, contributor to the New York Times Magazine and founding editor of the Jerusalem Report.

The controversial resolution at Intelligence Squared Debates' (IQ2US) latest intellectual matchup was the second in their themed season, "America's House Divided." The debate was moderated by ABC News Nightline's John Donvan.

Key excerpts from the debate include:

"Basically, the two-party system is like a stale marriage. Democrats and Republicans need something to spice it up. They need to go on Craigslist and find a third party."

"So they're weird social creatures [politicians]. Nonetheless, I would say in general, they are better people than one would anticipate. Most of them are in it for the right reason, but they're stuck in a rotten system. They're stuck in our current two-party system which forces them to behave in ways that are worse than they are. It's a mind suck."

"Now, I would argue in favor of America's two-party system not because of America's two political parties but because America doesn't really have political parties at all … Republicans and Democrats don't have ideologies. They just have these vague platform planks made of rotten wood of political expediency. If American party platforms were backyard tree forts, you would not let your children climb in them. Anyone can join an American political party, even a witch!"

"In multi-party systems, there are many people who also don't feel that they're represented by any of the parties. And I, having lived in a country [Israel] that has 14 parties, I can tell you that I didn't find any that represented me -- that's sort of an inherent problem of democracy. If you have a party that fits the taste of every person or every group of people, you'll have hundreds or a multiplicity of parties that makes it impossible to govern."

For this specific debate, the audience not only voted on the resolution, but also identified their political party affiliation – Republican, Democrat, Independent – at the top of the evening. Before the debate, the IQ2US audience voted with the following:

* 46 % of audience agreeing with the resolution
* 24 % of audience against the resolution
* 30 % undecided

After carefully considering the points, P.J. O'Rourke and Zev Chafets won the debate -- the team that moves the most votes at the end of the evening is determined the winner.

* 50 % of audience agreeing with the resolution
* 40 % of audience against the resolution
* 10 % undecided

The showdown at NYU's Skirball Center in New York City (566 LaGuardia Place) put the leading public intellectuals in the limelight in front of a live sold-out audience of 800 for nearly two hours of heated debate.

Statement of President Barack Obama on Egypt

WASHINGTON, February 11, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The Egyptian people have been told that there was a transition of authority, but it is not yet clear that this transition is immediate, meaningful or sufficient. Too many Egyptians remain unconvinced that the government is serious about a genuine transition to democracy, and it is the responsibility of the government to speak clearly to the Egyptian people and the world. The Egyptian government must put forward a credible, concrete and unequivocal path toward genuine democracy, and they have not yet seized that opportunity.

As we have said from the beginning of this unrest, the future of Egypt will be determined by the Egyptian people. But the United States has also been clear that we stand for a set of core principles. We believe that the universal rights of the Egyptian people must be respected, and their aspirations must be met. We believe that this transition must immediately demonstrate irreversible political change, and a negotiated path to democracy. To that end, we believe that the emergency law should be lifted. We believe that meaningful negotiations with the broad opposition and Egyptian civil society should address the key questions confronting Egypt's future: protecting the fundamental rights of all citizens; revising the Constitution and other laws to demonstrate irreversible change; and jointly developing a clear roadmap to elections that are free and fair.

We therefore urge the Egyptian government to move swiftly to explain the changes that have been made, and to spell out in clear and unambiguous language the step by step process that will lead to democracy and the representative government that the Egyptian people seek. Going forward, it will be essential that the universal rights of the Egyptian people be respected. There must be restraint by all parties. Violence must be forsaken. It is imperative that the government not respond to the aspirations of their people with repression or brutality. The voices of the Egyptian people must be heard.

The Egyptian people have made it clear that there is no going back to the way things were: Egypt has changed, and its future is in the hands of the people. Those who have exercised their right to peaceful assembly represent the greatness of the Egyptian people, and are broadly representative of Egyptian society. We have seen young and old, rich and poor, Muslim and Christian join together, and earn the respect of the world through their non-violent calls for change. In that effort, young people have been at the forefront, and a new generation has emerged. They have made it clear that Egypt must reflect their hopes, fulfill their highest aspirations, and tap their boundless potential. In these difficult times, I know that the Egyptian people will persevere, and they must know that they will continue to have a friend in the United States of America.
